Museums in São Francisco do Sul - Santa Catarina, Brazil

In São Francisco do Sul, you will find 3 museums, the Historic Museum; the National Sea Museum and the Museum of Sacred Art (near to the Catholic Church). Here, we will explain to you, their history in the city.



                                                          Historic Museum


The Museum was founded in 1985, underwent modernization in 2010 and presents itself in an interesting way.



The Municipal Historical Museum houses in its rooms and cells various objects donated by the community, such as documents, plants, newspapers and utensils, common to the daily lives of the people's ancestors
The history of the community is illustrated in the various photographs on the walls of the cells, with sugarcane and cassava mills in the external patio, as well as a machine used in the manufacture of tiles and a hearse from the beginning of the century. There is also a solitary cell that was used to detain the mentally ill and dangerous criminals

National Sea Museum


Inaugurated in 1993, the National Sea Museum has several themed rooms, featuring boats from the beginnings of the island's inhabitants, to the most elaborate fishing boats and sailboats.


       




  The National Sea Museum was a revitalization of the large warehouses of the Hoepcke company, abandoned for over twenty years. Which houses a wide range of Brazilian vessels, was revitalized between 2003 and 2004. 

  They are original boats from all over the country, several of them configuring some of the most expressive traditional boats in the world. Rafts, sloops, canoes, cutters, dinghies, trawlers and whaleboats are some of them.

  In the Rio São Francisco room, you will find historic fishing boats from the Northeast Region, used for fishing and transportation.

Museum of Sacred Art


Founded in 2013, the Padre Antônio Nóbrega Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art is one of the most imposing monuments in São Francisco, conceived in 1768 and completed in the early 1830s, the Catholic memory space is divided into two exhibition spaces.





There are approximately 800 pieces such as images of saints used in processions. In addition, there are also liturgical garments, silverware, objects of worship, books, glitters, adornments that are placed in Nossa Senhora da Graça.
